Question of the Week

Q. Because of several high-hat installations upstairs in my home, cold air comes through the holes where the lighting fixtures are located on the ceiling. I have several drafts. I want to cover the fixtures in the attic with a custom-made box, leaving enough of an opening in the box for heat to escape. Can I do this? Should I use aluminum or steel? – Greg L.

A. Greg, you are aware that just covering the high-hats with insulation can pose a fire threat, and you must have some kind of escape opening in any insulation plan, so heat won't build up. I do believe creating such a custom-made cover will work, however, I think you might find that specially made insulation covers (link below) will work better. The newest generation of recessed lighting fixtures have been made with the label IC, for INSULATION CONTACT rated. These fixtures can be covered with batt insulation, preventing air infiltration. Try this company, Tenmat USA, which specializes in foam covers (pictured above) specifically designed to seal older high hats.
